Statement on Violent Protests in Nepal
Monday, 8 September 2025 – I express deep concern over the violence in Nepal today, following the government’s decision to ban major social media platforms.
According to media reports, many lives have been lost and hundreds injured as security forces responded to protests with water cannons, tear gas, and even live ammunition. Such use of force against citizens-especially young people peacefully expressing their frustration-is unacceptable in any democratic society. Demonstrations must be allowed to take place peacefully, and any attempt to suppress them with violence only deepens public resentment and erodes trust in governance.
What we are witnessing is not just a reaction to a digital restriction, but a reflection of deeper, long-standing frustrations among Nepal’s youth. The lack of employment opportunities, economic stagnation, and limited prospects at home have forced thousands of Nepalis to seek work abroad every single day. This mass migration is not a sign of ambition-it is a symptom of desperation. The government must recognize that relying on foreign employment as a solution is unsustainable. Instead, it should focus on creating meaningful opportunities within the country by investing in skill development programs, fostering entrepreneurship, and building a work environment that encourages innovation and growth.
Nepal’s youth are not enemies of the state-they are its future. Their voices deserve to be heard, their concerns addressed, and their potential nurtured. The people of Nepal want peace, stability, development, and dignity. They are not asking for handouts-they are asking for a chance to build a life at home. It is the responsibility of the government to listen, to act, and to lead with compassion and foresight.
