Thursday, June 12, 2025 – The ongoing conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda is characterized by relentless violence and a complicated web of factors, including regional instability.

The recent hostilities in eastern Congo have inflicted severe violence and suffering upon innocent civilians for a duration of three and a half years.

In the aftermath of the 1994 genocide, during which around 800,000 individuals lost their lives in a mere 100 days, hundreds of thousands of Rwandans fled into the DRC, establishing refugee camps in the eastern part of the country, near the border with Rwanda. Since then, the eastern DRC has remained devoid of peace.

For the welfare of Rwanda, the DRC, and the broader region, it is imperative that the conflict in eastern DRC and the long-standing tensions between the two neighboring governments be resolved.

I have previously urged the governments and parties involved in the DRC and Rwanda conflict to engage in a peace process, as peace represents the only viable solution; in war, there are no true victors.

The people of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda long for peace and development, free from violence and conflict. I am committed to initiating peace discussions in Rwanda and Congo as part of my Global Peace 2030 agenda.
