President Mr. Sappan KC’s Statement on Colombia’s Suspension of Ceasefire with FARC Faction
Friday, 18 April 2025 – I have just reviewed the news reports indicating that the Colombian government has decided to suspend the ceasefire with a faction of the FARC. However, it clarified that this decision does not signify the termination of peace negotiations with the group, as the ceasefire with the FARC-EP faction had already lapsed earlier this week.
This ceasefire had been in place since December 2023 and had undergone multiple extensions. Progress in peace talks remains stagnant, as it is crucial for all parties to convene at the negotiating table to resolve a six-decade-long armed conflict that has resulted in over 450,000 fatalities.
I have proposed engaging my mediator with all parties in this peace dialogue, as I persistently urge the conflicting groups to reconcile and choose peace in line with the Global Peace 2030 agenda.
The people of the Republic of Colombia desire peace and development without violence or conflicts, therefore, I seek reconciliation with all conflicting groups.
