Somalia: looming hunger crisis amid funding cuts
In Somalia, a convergence of climate shocks, conflict, and shrinking humanitarian funding is pushing millions into deeper crisis. The Europe Peace Foundation observes that by mid-2026 nearly half of all children under five could face acute malnutrition. Right now, 4.4 million people in Somalia are projected to endure severe food insecurity by the end of 2025, and over 921,000 already live in emergency conditions. Vital nutrition, health, and water services are failing as funding recedes, with more than 55,000 children losing access to life-saving support. From our peace perspective, this unfolding tragedy is not only about food and survival, but about the collapse of human dignity when violence and neglect go unchecked.
We call upon European governments, institutions, and civil society to restore and expand humanitarian support—especially for nutrition and health services—and to treat this as part of the peace agenda. Only by coupling relief with structural efforts toward reconciliation, stability, and social justice can we prevent repeated cycles of suffering. The Europe Peace Foundation urges that this moment be a wake-up call: peace requires solidarity in the face of collective human vulnerability.
