Wednesday, 16 April 2025 – I have unequivocally denounced the recent assaults by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on displaced persons’ camps in the Darfur region, which have resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.
Media reports indicate that among the deceased are at least nine humanitarian aid workers and over 20 children. Last week, the RSF initiated a severe ground and aerial offensive targeting refugee camps near the city of el-Fasher in Darfur. The camps, including Zamzam and Abu Shouk, serve as temporary shelters for more than 700,000 individuals, many of whom are enduring conditions akin to famine.
Sudan descended into turmoil in April 2023 when escalating tensions between the army and the RSF erupted into widespread conflict throughout the country. The violence has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced at least 12 million people, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis.
I urge all parties involved, as well as those in positions of influence, to recommit to taking substantial actions aimed at resolving this conflict. I have proposed that my mediator engage with all relevant stakeholders in this peace dialogue, as I consistently advocate for the conflicting factions to pursue reconciliation and embrace peace in alignment with the Global Peace 2030 agenda.
The people of Sudan long for a future characterized by peace and development, free from violence and strife.
